1. Research and Study
Before I start work on a concept I search libraries, museums, online, and in person for everything related to the subject matter.
Here I do a few quick sketches or thumbnails to plan the groundwork for a design, when working with 3D sometimes the sketches will be done in 3D it's self or I will skip right to #4.
3. Sketch and Ideation
Here if required depending on detail of thumbnails I will do a separate finalized quick sketches or screen shots of a 3D scene to show the client before continuing, as well as design out different ideations important objects in the concept separately.
4. Base model
When necessary I will use 3D software to make a base to be painted over. 3D allows me to have more control over a concept. I will usually use Sketch Up and keyshot, but on occasion I will use something like a level editor. For textures a lot of time time I will take or paint my own in a photoshop document separately.
5. Paint, Photo texture, and finalize in Photoshop
Here will be the bulk of the work for an organic scene, and half the work in a scene with 3D.
Here is 3 videos I quickly produced showing 3 methods of working I might use. I also talk about how to design and what makes a good design through out them.
